Handling giving levels and memberships

The line between "donating" and "joining" is ever shifting, and defined individually by every nonprofit. We find that some participation models work well with Fundraise Up, and some just require a different feature-set.

Deciding if Fundraise Up's features match your model

Memberships and giving levels are a broad category, for which there are many tools. So, the first thing to do is to find those features of membership that are obvious rule-outs.

Here are some features of membership Fundraise Up does not easily accommodate:

  • Associated benefits that make membership only partially tax deductible
  • Quarterly or yearly auto-renewals
  • Physical or digital membership cards
  • Member directories
  • Access-controlled member pages

If your model relies on none of the above features, you can likely to use Fundraise Up features to drive your membership! In that case, it becomes a matter of deciding how payment is taken:

  • If your memberships or giving levels should be taken monthly until cancelled, those can be made as monthly recurring donations via Fundraise Up.
  • If your members are responsible for initiating their yearly or periodic payments themselves, those can be made as one-time donations via Fundraise Up.

Using the Monthly Recurring model

  1. Make a Campaign that represents your ongoing recurring contributions that should be considered memberships or donors at a particular giving level. Make sure to restrict giving to that campaign to only monthly recurring gifts.
  2. Set the Donor Portal to disallow decreases in recurring gift amount without admin approval.
  3. Customize your Campaign's Emails to reflect their recurring participation as a member.
  4. Make button, form, or card Elements for which you:
    1. set the Donation Amount to Customize, and specify the amount
    2. uncheck the checkbox labeled Allow donor to change it

By doing the above, you create a setup where monthly donors through this Campaign will be able to make and cancel their own membership payments, but will not be able to give at levels aside from the specified ones or reduce their giving level without notice.

Using the One Time model

  1. Make a Campaign that represents your static contributions that should be considered memberships or donors at a particular giving level. Make sure to restrict giving to that campaign to only one-time gifts.
  2. Customize your Campaign's Emails to reflect their one-time donation's renewal of their participation as a member.
  3. Make button, form, or card Elements for which you:
    1. set the Donation Amount to Customize, and specify the amount
    2. uncheck the checkbox labeled Allow donor to change it
  4. Independently, make automation or manually mass email donors approaching their end-of-membership with a link to the page where you have your Campaign's Elements, so that they can choose their membership level for the upcoming term.

By doing the above, you create a setup where one-time donors through this Campaign will be able to make their own membership payments.
