Refunding and Cancelling Donations

One-time donations and installments of recurring plans can be refunded from Fundraise Up. Recurring plans can be cancelled from either the dashboard or the Donor Portal.


Refunding a Donation

To refund a Donation, you need to be on that Donation's page in the Fundraise Up dashboard. There are plenty of ways to get there - the easiest way is to use the global search bar, but you can also find it via the filters on the Donations tab, in the corresponding Supporter record, and in the installments as shown on the Recurring plan if applicable.

Once on the page for the Donation you'd like to refund, you can click a button in the top right labeled Refund Donation, which will show you a popup dialog. As shown below, the popup notifies you that while Fundraise Up always returns processing fees to your organization for refunded donations, Stripe and Paypal will no longer return their initial fees.

From there, clicking the red Refund Donation button will initiate the refund proper, and send out the Refund email template.

As part of our global receipting compliance, we include a PDF Receipts in the Refund email template that bear a "Cancelled" stamp and are clearly marked with the date the update to the donation Receipt was issued.

The payment method the donor used will determine the amount of time it takes for the refunded funds to be available to the donor; Stripe indicates that their refunds usually process out in 5-10 business days, whereas PayPal refunds can take up to 30 days. 


Cancelling a Recurring plan

From the Dashboard

Similarly, to cancel a Recurring plan, you need to be on its page in the Fundraise Up dashboard. There are plenty of ways to get there - the easiest is the global search bar, but you can also find it via the filters on the Recurring tab, in the corresponding Supporter record, and on each installment's Donation record.

Once on the page of the Recurring plan you'd like to cancel, you can click the Cancel Recurring button in the top right to cancel any future installments of the plan!

From the Donor Portal

Your recurring donors receive an initial receipt and installment receipts for every payment; at the bottom of that email, there's a button that'll take them to their Donor Portal showing the details of that Recurring plan. 

Your Donor Portal's cancellation behavior is configurable, but whether you've enabled donors to cancel their own plans or have them submit a cancellation form, they can start that process by clicking the Cancel Donation button at the bottom of their Donor Portal. 


Redirect funds to other Campaigns or Designations

Donating funds, at the time of donation, is an agreement by the donor to provide funds to the specified Campaign (and Designation, if applicable). 

Our interface, with a new Edit button on Donations and Recurring Plans, now allows editing of Campaign and Designation! So, as long as you have clear indications from a donor that they would like their funds to be redirected, you may now adjust those records as you see fit.  

Beyond that, it is vital to know what editing Campaigns and Designations will do and won't do.

  • What this will do: Update the edited record, cause any historical syncs you run including said record to reflect the new info, affect all associated donations when a recurring plan is edited.
  • What this won't do: Reissue any past receipts from Fundraise Up.
